Boroko, Port Moresby, PNG, 30 May 2024 -- Nearly five hundred (500) oratorians, volunteer students, and staff gathered at Don Bosco Technological Institute’s gymnasium in East Boroko on May 26, 2024, to give special honour to Mother Mary, Help of Christians.
The Oratorians carried flowers to the venue and offered them to Mother Mary at the start of the celebration. This was followed by catechism conducted by Fr Ariel Macatangay, SDB. A special tribute was organised to celebrate the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, coinciding with the Silver Jubilee of the institute’s foundation. Generous churchgoers from the Shrine donated milk drinks, juice, biscuits, noodles, and toiletries for the children and their companions who were present. These donations were used for refreshments and prizes for the six (6) fun games, as well as the dance and song contests.
The cheerful and energetic crowd of spectators cheered for their house colours competing in the games and presentations. The fun games were divided into Junior and Senior divisions, depending on the age bracket of the participants. All songs performed referred to Mother Mary, and the dance items had a religious context. Winners were declared from the various competitions by a panel of judges.
Adding to the excitement, other manifestations of reverence to the Blessed Virgin Mary came from children aged 3-7, who performed a dance, and from student-animators who presented a song.
Apart from the enjoyment, physical nourishment, and a special ice cream treat provided by the Salesians, the Oratorian were also inspired by a 'Good Afternoon Talk' from Fr. Sylvester Kuli, SDB.
Thanks to the wonderful collaboration of the Salesians, the FMA Sisters, the male and female student residents of DBTI, other volunteers, and the staff of DBTI, the event was a special way to celebrate with the Oratorians and honour Mary, Help of Christians.
