Basics of Hospitality & Tourism Course at DBTI (PNG-SI)

HONIARA (SOLOMON ISLANDS) 28 August, 2013 - Over Don Bosco Technical Institutes’10-year history, the focus has been on industry trades. The institute began with automotive and over the years it has come to include carpentry, electrical, life skills and machine fitting maintenance. Short Courses and Outreach programmes are also conducted. The majority of the students are male. Females largely attend the Life Skills course, which propels them into careers of teaching, nursing and hospitality. Although the institute is working towards increasing the number of young women studying these traditionally male trades, having a new course in hospitality will provide another opportunity for females and males who are be pushed out of the school system due to personal issues such as pregnancy or marriage but still opt to continue education if given a second chance. Thanks to the EU funded ‘Project Hospitality’ the course in Basics of Hospitality & Tourism has commenced.

16 young men and women are now enthusiastic participants at the Hospitality Short Course at Don Bosco Technical Institute, Henderson. The programme commenced on 12th August and will run for 5 weeks intensive in ‘Service Excellence’. Animator Mario Braganza brings to the course his rich and wide experience spanning several years of training in the Hospitality Industry. He is delighted with the participants and looks forward to assist the participants as they strive for excellence.

The first week, gave the participants an Introduction to the Hospitality Industry with a peek into the different departments in a Hotel. Challenging physical and mental exercises have enabled the individual’s work, think and relate to each other as a team. Having a mix of both girls and boys has given the course an even balance and in turn a mutual respect for each other.

Monday the 19th August was their first trip to Heritage Park Hotel, Honiara that allowed the students to see what the insides of a hotel are really like. The experience has spurred them on to the many possibilities open to them in the industry. Dilip Acharya, Training Manager, Heritage Park Hotel took the students around and gave a variety of presentations and discussions as he helped them understand a few aspects of this important industry. The week was a combination of both practical and theory lessons in the different departments. We look forward to a successful completion of this course.
