The bulk of Braido's study of the Preventive System now available
ROME: 5th October 2012 -- Twelve years have passed since Peter Braido published his Prevenire non reprimere, Il sistema educativa di Don Bosco, or in English, Prevetnion, not Repression: Don Bosco's educational system.  And that's the point! Now that we are in or about to enter (depending on where you are) the second phase of preparation for the Bicentenary, Braido's work is regarded as a sine qua non for the study of Don Bosco's educational approach, but it has thus far been unavailable to the English reader who has no or little Italian.

The work in question has 19 chapters. 18 of these have been translated thus far. The 19th, 'Looking to the future', is a lengthy one, and the translator is still working on it! But the 18 thus far completed are quite sufficient for anyone wanting to get to grips with the material. 

As is customary for an academic work, there are abundant footnotes!  These notes in themselves are a book! Obviously titles must remain in the language in which they were cited, but he translator has attempted to put into English any reference which might help the reader, even at times breaking the 'rules' so to speak for translation of footnotes. It seemed pointless to just copy and paste notes which would be of little advantage to someone who had no idea what they were saying.

When the entire work is complete, with bibliography and index etc., then perhpas the 'powers that be' will be interested in a printed English edition, but for now it seems that the important thing is to get this work into the hands of anyone who might find it helpful. My guess is that there are a considerable number of such people around!

The work is available in SDL at the link indicated here, but if you are searching for it at other times, go to the English collection and look for it under Braido as author.  Each chapter is separate, so you might need or want to download 18 separate items (nineteen if you include the introduction, which you should. Don't forget that documents downloaded from SDL are called doc.doc generically, so you would want to rename the first part of the file accordingly, otherwise you will get lost in 19 doc.docs!
