Flurry of EAO activity over the next ten days

EAO: 14 October 2010 -- It's all happening! From one end of the Region to the other there is a flurry of activity, Spirit.inspired, sheer human effort, Saints 'completing' their saintly path (in human terms) and Saints just starting out! A General Chapter about to conclude, a 'first' for ADMA and the Salesian Family - hopefully over the next week or so we will be able to keep you up to date with all the news, but here for starters, is a run-down on at least some of the things that are happening:
    - The Rector major and his Vicar are currently in Korea, or rather, just arriving as we write.
    - This weekend in Rome will see the canonisation of Mary McKillop, first Australian Saint.
    - The Rector Major and his Vicar will arrive in the Philippines on 18 October, and remain until 22.
    - The Caritas Sisters of Jesus have been holding their General Chapter in Korea (they have re-elected Sr Apollinaris as Mother General), and of course they will meet up with Fr Chavez and Fr Bregolin as part of the latters' swing through Korea. Fr Bregolin will be preaching at the closing ceremony for the Chapter.
    - The Salesian Family in the Philippines has been very much alive already in these weeks: on 9 October they held a Recollection day at Makati for the FIN group of the family, with Fr Henry Bonetti (KOR but 'on loan' for the moment to Paranaque) as facilitator. This gathering saw SDB, FMA, ASC, DBV, ADMA, the 'Damas', Past Pupils of both FMA and SDB, and SCG members come together in quantity (some 250 altogether).
    - The first Regional Mary Help of Christians Congress (to be held at Paranaque)  will be from 21-24 October, in the presence of ADMA Salesian Spiritual Animator Fr Pierluigi Cameroni. This will combine with the 28th National Congress for ADMA.
    - Fr Braga, long-time missionary in China back in the days when Bishop Versiglia was at Shiu Chow, provincial, founder of many Salesian presences and works through the length and breadth of China, then Hanoi, then the Philippines (where he died in 1971) will be the centre of attention during the visit of the Rector Major to Philippines North. He will spend a day at Don Bosco Academy Mabalacat, Pampanga, where the initial steps of the Cause for canonisation will be taken - in the presence of Cardinal Zen from Hong Kong and the Salesian Bishops from the Philippines. That's a pretty powerful launch to the altars!
And none of this should overlook the fact that there is an Extraordinary Visitation well underway in Japan and that on November 7th there will be another interesting 'first' - elections in Myanmar! The Catholic Bishops Conference has sent a message to Senior General Than Shwe which says, amongst other things: "We are glad you have fixed the date for the General Election. All Christian Churches are praying for the country. We are praying that there may be justice, peace, freedom and development in our country. Since November 7th is a Sunday and the 'Sabbath' for Christians, we will be praying for the success of this General Election".  They have also written to other Christian Churches, telling them "Lift up your prayers for the country because there is no impossibility with God.  You are responsible especially to choose the representatives who promote justice, liberty, equality, unity and development of the country.  Learn to elect accurately and responsibly in accordance with the principles of the General Election".
