Preparation for the Salesian Youth Leaders Samoan Immersion

MELBOURNE: 31 March 2010 -- Under the auspices of the Cagliero Project (the AUL Lay Missionary Project) a group of young leaders from Australia is preparing to travel to Samoa for three weeks for an Immersion Experience and to provide some Leadership training.
    The group, coming from a number of Salesian works in Australia, recently held a preparation weekend at the Salesian Camp at Dromana where they deepened their understanding of Don Bosco and the Salesian Charism, received input on the particular social, cultural and youth settings of Samoa and planned the various activities and programs they will undertake.    
    Whilst in Samoa the group will conduct a leadership camp for young leaders of the Salesian Parish of Leauva’a, run oratory activities in Leauva’a and also the Parish of Sinamoga, visit the Island of Savai’I as well as experience living with Samoan families in the traditional village settings.
    Ms Lauren Bicknell (coordinator of the Cagliero Project) conducted the planning weekend with the support of Mr Ashley Trethowan (Camp Coordinator), Sr Margaret Bentley (FMA Provincial), Fr Bernie Graham (SDB Youth Ministry Delegate) and Fr John Papworth. Three young Samoan Salesian students Brs Toni Lealea, Pati Ioane and Ralph Solomona provided invaluable insights into Samoan culture and taught the group many skills, including how to wear the traditional lava lava, and prepared them for the formal kava welcome ceremony.
    The group is looking forward to sharing their Salesian Youth Leadership skills with young leaders in Samoa in July.
