Cardinal Zen on Salesian and missionary spirituality
RAMSEY (USA): 19 October 2009 -- Last week, Cardinal Joseph Zen made a flying visit to Rome, then immediately left for the US. On Saturday October 17 the retired bishop of Hong Kong led a day of recollection for almost 90 Salesian priests, sisters, brothers, novices, and candidates from the New York metro area at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey. Specifically, there were confreres and sisters from New Rochelle, Port Chester, Ramsey, Haledon, North Haledon, Elizabeth, Orange, and Newton.
The cardinal gave two conferences to the entire group and also had two question-answer sessions, one with the young men and women in formation and one with the whole group. The day concluded with the celebration of the Sunday vigil liturgy, at which the cardinal preached.
In his conferences the cardinal, a native of Shanghai, spoke of Salesian spirituality and how that affected the development of his own vocation in the 1930s; of the present situation of the Church in China; and of the Salesians in Hong Kong.
Questions from the young Salesians and candidates concerned not only those same matters, but also the qualities that are important for them as they discern or continue to follow their own vocations, and what they ought to do if they hope one day to be missionaries.
