"Called, gifted and sent...."

MELBOURNE: 13th April 2008 -- "Called. gifted and sent to serve the Lord with joy" is the title of the Melbourne Salesian Days programme to form part of the Days in the Diocese events leading directly to World Youth Day celebrations in Sydney.  Fr John Papworth, vice provincial of the Australia-Pacific Province, released the programme this past week. It will be celebrated on 11th July 2008.
Fr Papworth said that Salesian College Chadstone, in Melbourne's south eastern suburbs, ' will become a huge festive oratory for the day. It will be a day of joyous, hope-filled celebration'.  He added that 'young people from Salesian centres in Victoria and from throughout the world will be able to celebrate our shared faith in a typically Salesian manner that would make Don Bosco smile, shout and jump for joy'.
Special guests for the day will include Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga from Honduras, the Rector Major, Fr Pascual Chávez Villanueva, Bishop Tim Costelloe sdb from Melbourne and hopefully other Salesian Bishops who will be visiting Australia and on their way to Sydney's World Youth Day.
Fr Papworth indicated that the day will be filled with games, activities, bands and other entertainment to ensure that the expected 1,000 young people in attendance would be able to celebrate in true Salesian fashion. Catechesis and prayer will be interspersed throughout the day.
The day will start early in order to incorporate Cardinal Rodriguez' busy schedule and to maximise his time with the group. He will speak then respond to questions posed by participants from around the world. After lunch the Rector Major will lead the gathering in a celebration of the Stations of the Cross. The pilgrim themes of World Youth Day will be evident as participants move around five selected stations located throughout the College grounds.
Food and drink will be provided throughout the day.
The day will conclude in time for pilgrims to make their way to Telstra Dome in Melbourne City for the World Youth Day Commissioning Mass for pilgrims to be celebrated by Archbishop Hart of Melbourne.
Salesian groups wishing to register for the day should do so via the Australian Salesian website www.sdb.org.au . Go to the WYD page and folow the links to the registration page. International groups should also ensure that they are registered as official WYD pilgrims via the Sydney WYD site, www.wyd2008.org .
The day commences with registration between 7.30 and 8.15 am, followed by the first gathering at 8.30. The remainder of the programme can be seen on the Australian Salesian website and also on Bosconet.
