Election time!
ROME: 24th March 2008 -- Before you get too excited, just note two things: [1] the election process is a discernment process (you can follow it blow by blow on the GC26 website from www.sdb.org as it takes place over a number of days) and [2] there are some clearly established rules for proclaiming the results. Essentially these are as follows:
* no results of the process - discernment, election - will leave the Chapter Hall before being formally announced by the duly elected secretaries (who are being elected on the basis of names proposed by the President, as this is being written).
* following a tradition of 'reserve' in both the Church and the Congregation regarding these matters, the actual results (numbers, this means) won't be divulged, but at the point in the voting process where a definitive result is achieved, the one elected will be proclaimed. In the case of the election of the Rector Major it will be proclaimed once the oldest member of the Chapter (this would, I think, be the provincial in Hungary who is completing 18 years as provincial, unless there's someone else who scrapes in above him!) has asked him if he will accept, and he answers 'yes'.
* to facilitate an overall communication of the election of the Rector Major and his Council to the Salesian world the ANS news service will prepare a bulletin and the information therein will be the best source of complete and accurate information for Salesian Bulletins and other Salesian channels at the local level.
So, that's why there's no need to get too excited too early! And as austraLasia is a respectable news channel serving EAO, and others who happen to receive it, it will not be running scuttlebutt or ill-informed gossip. It will accompany the overall discernment process in a spirit of creative journalism.
Today is given over entirely to discernment in a prayerful way, where people will be following the 4 stages set out in the process.
