The power of the Word - seven times over!

MELBOURNE: 14th October 2007 -- Despite his energetic preaching of the Word, one preacher would not wish to attach Mt 18:21-22 to this news item (As often as seven times? Jesus answered - not seven I tell you but seventy-seven times!).  After a year of taking on not only the confreres' annual retreats in the Australia-Pacific Province, but also similar retreats in Hua Hin for Thai confreres, and elsewhere, the Australian Provincial, Fr Frank Moloney, thinks this might be just enough for one year.
Fr Moloney had already accepted the commitment for the Thai retreats before being appointed provincial, and after putting it off for one year, decided to honour the commitment. He also decided that it might be useful, at least once in his period office, to preach the usual series of annual retreats for his own province rather than ask another or others to do so.  His comment: "Everyone who did this retreat - including the preacher (7 times) -  felt the power of the Word. It was an important experience for the Province".
No surprise that he built the retreats around a range of biblical themes: call to discipleship,  the mission of the disciple, formation of the disciple,  restoration of failing disciples, Peter and Judas: contrasts in discipleship, a Gospel portrait of Mary,  the man born blind,  Mary, Martha, the disciples and the Jews at the resurrection of Lazarus, the challenge of the life, teaching, death and resurrection of Jesus (2 talks).
No doubt the text of these talks will be available at some stage.  Should this be the case, they will be traceable in due course on SDL or Bosconet.
Earlier this year Fr Moloney republished his The Living Voice of the Gospels, in the light of continuing biblical scholarship and new insights.
