Salesian Family celebrates 'Chusok' with special touch
SEOUL: 6th October 2006 -- This week in nations like China, Vietnam, Korea, tends to be one long holiday as the moon cake festival is celebrated. In Korea this is known as Chusok, also celebrated with a strong harvest thanksgiving theme. The population is on the move, travelling to their homes and to ancestral graves to give thanks. What better occasion, then, for the Salesian Family to gather in Seoul at the city-owned but Salesian Society-entrusted Vocational Training Centre at Ko Dok Dong for the 8th Salesian Family Spirituality Day.
Some 300 Salesian Family members gathered on the occasion under the banner of 'The Salesian Family Spirit in the life of society today'. The day (1st October) was introduced by a dance on the theme by the Caritas Sisters postulants, drawing on the 2006 Strenna of the Rector Major for inspiration. Introductory talks were given by the Provincial, Fr Paul Hwang and a special visitor to the FMA province, General Councillor Sr Wilma De Souza. They spoke of the precious gift of family spirit shared in our settings and which gives spiritual strength and attraction to the Salesian lifestyle.
The keynote address this year was provided by Sr Hyun Wol Shin FMA on educating children in the current cultural and social environment of Korea. Mr Henry Woo, Salesian Cooperator provincial coordinator, shared his experience of the Salesian vocation in his own family. He is a Salesian past pupil, his wife a past pupil of the Sisters and his youngest sister an FMA living in Daejon with youth at risk, Nazareth House. To cap it all his eldest son Felix is a temporary professed SDB practical trainee in Seoul.
As with most Salesian gatherings, time after lunch was devoted to games. Later in the afternoon Mass was celebrated. Participants were then free to begin their week-long Chusok holiday.
