H K Institute of Education to confrere Doctorate 'honoris causa' on Fr Peter Newbery

HONG KONG: 11th July 2006 -- Long recognised at international level for his work with the waifs and strays of Hong Kong and elsewhere in China, but especially for the symbol of such work, Youth Outreach in Hong Kong (opened 1993), Fr Peter Newbery is now to receive due recognition from home territory via the Hong Kong Institute of Education with a Doctor of Education, honoris causa which will be formally conferred on 17th November this year.
"The information came to me totally out of the blue", said Fr Newbery, speaking with austraLasia this week. "The President of the HKIED phoned me".  The Institute later sent him a letter which cites the motivations for the award: "in recognition of your significant and exemplary contributions to youth work and your pivotal role in the establishment and operation of Youth Outreach".  The Graduation Ceremony will also involve a dinner hosted in honour of Fr Newbery and any other potential graduands at Hong Kong's top class Conrad Hilton Hotel.
It is most appropriate that a Hong Kong-based education Institute should confer this degree.  Youth Outreach includes an entire floor dedicated to the HK Institute of Youth Studies, which trains youth workers, provides outreach for social workers and offers teacher education on delinquent and marginalised youth and preventive approaches. Teachers come not only from the SAR (special Administrative Region of HK) but from the mainland.  In addition to his work with Youth Outreach, Fr Newbery, who has spent 40 years in China, also lectures at the Chinese University in Hong Kong.
