PNG inaugurates Salesian Family Council

PORT MORESBY: 14th June 2006 -- June 12 marked another milestone in the history of the Salesian Family in PNG.  The Salesian Family Council met for the first time at the SDB Delegation House in Boroko.  Representatives from the SDB, FMA, CSM (Caritas Sisters of Miyazaki), Cooperators and Past Pupils met to discuss ways to foster collaboration amongst the different groups of the Salesian Family.  For various reasons, representatives of the Association of Mary Help of Christians and the Michaelites were unable to attend the meeting.
The new born Council agreed to cultivate the sense of belonging to the Salesian Family in a spirit of communion found in Don Bosco's charism which all groups of the Salesian Family share.  To attain this goal they agreed to meet initially on a quarterly basis in order to:
- promote deeper knowledge of the various groups of the Salesian Family, and appreciation for their specific identity.
- organise joint activities that are planned and then evaluated for their explicit formational value
- foster family spirit through common celebration of anniversaries, jubilees etc.
- foster a lively sense of the Church so as to respond to the pastoral challenges of the local Church according to our common Salesian charism and the individual group's specific identity.
The Council agreed to organise the annual Salesian Family Day with moments for formation, fellowship and celebration.  This year it will be on July 8th when all the Salesians are in Port Moresby for their Extraordinary Assembly of Confreres which will start the next day.  The Council also decided to hold an annual Salesian Family Retreat in Holy Week.
The Commission for the Salesian Family in the PNG/SI Delegation was set up last year and one of its early goals was to set up the Salesian Family Council
