Nestlé: this time a sweetener

LAHORE: 18th September 2005 --  It seems that a little publicity in the right places can actually achieve things.  The situation of Nestlé vis-a-vis Don Bosco Technical and Youth Centre students in Lahore is now being given positive attention by the multinational group's local management, with a promise to re-consider the nature of employment of appropriately technically trained boys from the DBTYC.
austraLasia ran a story in #1248 indicating the possibility that discriminatory reasons may prevent the employment of boys from the Centre in areas which they were appropriately trained for.  The story was picked up by other media.  The Centre's director has indicated that a conciliatory approach has been adopted by management and that prospects for employment now look to be on track.  Time will tell.
The DBTYC is a relatively new institution in the area, but it has already gained government approval and recognition for its contribution to Pakastani society, especially for the technical training of young men who may otherwise not have had the chances.  The Salesians running the Centre believe firmly in the importance of establishing not just good relationships with local industry, but productive ones in terms of job opportunities for their students.  They are also convinced that the 'good Christian and honest citizen' values they are inculcating can only benefit Pakistan's increasingly multicultural society.
