Australian Salesian Missions raises $3m for overseas aid projects

MELBOURNE:  9th June 2005 --  Not including the Tsunami Relief activities of Australian Salesian Missions Overseas Aid Fund (ASMOAF), just under 3 million dollars was raised in 2004, according to the annual report of the Fund.  Of that amount more than two and a half million dollars was disbursed during 2004, the remainder, apart from a small administrative amount, was then disbursed in early 2005.
People readily understand the term 'Salesian Missions' as identifying the work done by the Salesians of Don Bosco in well over 100 nations throughout the world.  ASMOAF regularly advertises its activities, and all grants and donations are directed to ASMOAF as a registered fund. ASMOAF then works with partners and partner projects throughout the Salesian world.
A breakdown of funds distributed for various designated purposes indicates that ASMOAF is active not only in the Pacific (Samoa, PNG, Solomon Islands and Fiji where there are Salesian works) but the length and breadth of Africa, from Ethiopia to Swaziland, Central America, South America and Yemen, North of the Sahara.
It can be noted that in 2004 ASMOAF collection of funds was completely free of Government or other grants, and an absolute minimum of resources goes to the administration of the programme.  Donors can always be guaranteed, then, that their 'dollar' goes precisely where they want it to go.  This fine record of ASMOAF no doubt encouraged many donors in late December and January of this year to use ASMOAF as their channel for assisting people affected by the Asian Tsunami - but that will be another report.
VOCABULARY
disburse: to distribute funds
