austraLasia on the road - to Emmaus
Br. Nguyen Tuan Pham Anh John

EMMAUS: 29th March 2005 --  Yesterday, bread was broken on the road to Emmaus.  It was received from the hands of the Curator of the Holy Places in the Holy Land.  The road to Emmaus, or should we say a likely candidate amongst several 'Emmauses', was perhaps a little longer than the route taken by the two disciples, caused by the desire of the Palestinian driver (alas, in this modern age, we did not walk, but Jesus can also be found in mini-buses!) to avoid certain roads and to move through Palestinian (though occupied) areas instead.  And the bread was consumed while we waited for our driver, who had gone to the next-door mosque to pray; perhaps there we found Jesus in the stranger.
austraLasia has some new correspondents!  They live in Jerusalem.  From an earlier issue you learned that there are a number of students from EAO region at the Salesian Theological Institute, Jerusalem, located in the centre of New Jerusalem, in the Ratisbonne building not far from the Knesset in one direction or from the Old City via Jaffa Gate in the other.
You are receiving austraLasia these days occasionally from Jerusalem or from nearby well-known locations (such as Emmaus, today) because our student body is being encouraged by Fr Julian to provide news.  And he is here with us to show us how.
Fr Julian arrived on Wednesday at Ben Gurion airport Tel Aviv from Rome where he works both within the Social Communications Department and the EAO Region.  He is offering us a course in Communications - as he puts it, a course based less on theory and more on practice given that he has been a practical, rather than a theoretically trained communicator.
austraLasia, which began in 1997, and which reaches all corners of the region and beyond with several thousand readers, is for us a practical example of IT and communication.  The Salesian apostolate amongst the young can only be completed if young Salesians understand how to make use of internet, email, web, along with, of course, the most basic ability of the Salesian to be a true communicator in his personal desire to communicate and educate...
