HEALTH ETHICS RESEARCH CENTRE: A SLANT ON YOUTH NEEDS

MELBOURNE: 23rd August -- As could be expected from a work that is directed by a Salesian, even though not a work specifically of the Province, the Caroline Chisholm Centre for Health Ethics includes in its research and reflection topics with direct reference to the needs of young people and those who work with them.   The Centre opened in 1995 and its founding Director, Dr. Norman Ford SDB, guides the small team which helps the nine major Catholic HealthCare Institutes of the State of Victoria to respond to ethical questions arising daily in the Health Care field.  The Centre's Quarterly Bulletin offers articles which are short, solid, well researched, readable and directed to informed persons seeking moral truth in health ethics in the Catholic Christian tradition.  Amongst these articles are a number with reference to youth and young people, which may provide useful support for teachers, counsellors and others whose pastoral interest and task involves working with young people.
A starting point that serves as an overview could be 'Ethics and Adolescent Health' in Vol 5 #4 (all Bulletins are accessible in pdf format from the Centre's website).  This is focused further in 'Young People and the Health Care System' (Vol 7 #2) with special reference to the Australian Health Care System.  There are specific articles dealing with such matters as 'Substance Abuse and Young People' (Vol 8,#4), and 'Ethical Issues in ADHD: diagnosis and management' (Vol 8,#3).  Other articles on Youth Suicide (Vol 1,#3) and also  general but useful material on '..finding out what is morally good and morally bad' (Vol 5,#1) round off what appears to be a rare collection of solidly documented and readable research for practitioners in the field.
