CALCUTTA STUDENTS KEEP THEIR CITY CLEAN

By C. M. Paul, SDB

KOLKATA, 7th May (DBIS) - Students of Don Bosco School Park Circus
Kolkata have come up with a novel way to keep city clean. They have
beautified a traffic circle near the school.

The half-hour inaugural function on 7th May morning started off with a
song on Don Bosco by Usha Uthup, Kalkatta's own pop star and singing
sensation. The students from Don Bosco Day School, Night School and
Technical School flanked the roads with banners calling for a cleaner
Kolkata.

Mr. Subrata Mukherjee, Kolkata Mayor inaugurated the Don Bosco Traffic
Circle near the school at the junction of Sundari Mohan Avenue, Darga
Road and Suhrawady Avenue. Along with the local Councilor and two
Members of the Legislative Assembly, the Mayor unveiled three plaques
placed at the centre. They have a sketch each of Don Bosco with flags of
the nations making a garland and an inscription "Don Bosco in Kolkata 75
years."

Speaking on the occasion, Fr. Francis Alencherry, Salesian provincial,
praised the efforts of  "Don Bosco boys in taking activities beyond the
school gates."
In his inaugural address the Mayor thanked the school in coming forward
to help beautify the city.

Incidentally, the Calcutta Municipal Corporation had assigned the same
spot in the year 1998 to install a life size statue of Mother Teresa to
mark her first death anniversary. Unfortunately, the Missionaries of
Charity decision makers declined the offer and stopped the installation
initiative of the statue by a Citizens Committee.
