Article on the Formation Talk on Social Media

By Emma Schmidt, DBTI Student

Port Moresby, PNG, 22 July 2017 -- We are living in the world of technology and it is here to stay! Fr. Ambrose Pereira SDB, addressed the members of the Mary Our Help (MOH) ladies’ dormitory at Don Bosco Technological Institute, Boroko. The enlightening workshop cum session on Social Media was entitled, ‘Understanding Social Media Rightly’. All the 80 ladies who reside there were present in the study hall on 22nd July, for the session that commenced at 5.35pm.

After the opening prayer the participants were given an insight into Social Media. Fr. Ambrose helped the ladies understand the different types of social networks being used today. The session was facilitated in a way that involved all. It included discussion in groups, video clips and the presentation of a survey that led the participants to think, discuss and share their reflections and insights. Questions were asked that made everyone reflect on how much time they spend using their smart phones. The short video clips were very factual. It reflected similar situations in our lives. The information was new and the presentation simple, clear and interesting.

“People should try to use Social Media in a good way because what you post or share portrays who you are as a person,” said, Joanne Masiri, the captain of the MOH Ladies Dormitory. She expressed herself after viewing a short video clip that was projected.

“Digital gadgets are now replacing our friends and the people that are close to us,” said Agnes Sime. Several ladies shared that they did not realize how their digital gadgets (smart phones, smart watches, etc.) were controlling their lives. They said that they tend to spend most of their time holding on to their phones and don’t even think about their companions who are physically present with them.

Reflecting on the presentation, the ladies are committed to ensure that what they post will be positive and they will be in control of their devices rather than being controlled by them.

It was a successful and outstanding presentation. So DON’T LET YOUR BATTERIES CONTROL YOU!
