Do not forget! Light a candle!
ROME: 27th January 2009 -- It would not have been appropriate to mix the topic relating to #2340 on a well-deserved reward with a reminder that is in fact most appropriate for today - Holocaust Memorial Day. If you go to www.hmd.org.uk you may light a candle for this event.
It is also appropriate to send out this reminder particularly in the light of criticism of our Holy Father in recent days. In a week of Christian Unity he has made a prophetic gesture on behalf of people of integrity who wish to remain in full communion with the Church by rescinding an excommunication for four Bishops of the SSPX. The fact that one of those bishops has unacceptable views on the Holocaust has nothing to do with the Pope's reconciliatory action.
Four years ago leaders of Salesian Schools in Europe gathered at Auschwitz-Birkenau to pray for tolerance. This kind of action marks us out as people who wish to see an end to massive inhuman intolerance of any kind - be it in Auschwitz, Cambodia, Ruanda, Darfur, Palestine or wherever.
