(Note - this appeared in the US-based National Catholic Reporter for whom John Allen is the Rome correspondent. He was in fact in direct contact with ANS with a view to making the report that follows, but since he was in contact from New York, we suggested it made sense - he needed his info immediately - to interview locally in the US.
