Katrina: first reports - confreres safe but property battered

NEW ORLEANS:  30th August 2005 -- First Salesian reports coming out of the New Orleans and Mississippi areas where Katrina blasted through 24 hours ago are sketchy.  A few minutes ago word came through concerning St. John Bosco Parish, Harvey.  The Deacon there who by this time was in Orlando Florida taking refuge from the events has spoken with Fr Sid Figlia at the Parish in Harvey.  Fr Sid  reports much damage to the Church and buildings but that he and other confreres are safe.
There are around a dozen confreres in the region directly affected by the category 4 version of Katrina as well as a number of FMA communities.  Two parishes in Harvey, and Shaw Secondary College in Marrero.  Further up in Alabama there is also a parish in Birmingham but the storm would have weakened by that stage.  There have been no comments from confreres in Marrero, and it is known that phones and electricity are all out in that region, cell phones as well.  Shaw is about a mile  south of  the Mississippi River.  The FMA have schools a little closer to the river in both Marrero and Westwego, west of Marrero.
