Japan Province Vocation Camp 2008

TOKYO: 18th August 2008 -- The 36th annual vocation camp for the Japanese Province has just concluded; it ran from 12-17 August at Nojiri, in the Nagano prefecture (Honshu Island, inland). The mild climate and natural beauty of the surrounds contributed to developing an ideal environment for combining serious effort with quiet relaxation in Salesian style.
Around 50 students from middle and upper secondary (all Catholics, something somewhat rare in Japan) took part, the largest number so far for these camps.  It meant relegating the leaders to the corridors to sleep!
This coming November 24, at Nagasaki, there will be the Beatification of Fr Peter Kasui Kibe and 187 companions, martyrs.  Their life and witness were used as a theme for the camp, and participants reflected on it in song and with recitations. The liturgy was looked after by young Salesians in formation and the music by the so-called YLB (Young Lay Brothers Band), a group of three Brothers who have shown great prowess in this field.
The Vice Provincial, Fr Francis Hamasaki, along with some young and not so young Salesians led the camp. It was a chance for all to reflect on vocation and mission under the inspiring mantle of the aforementioned martyrs.
The fact that the greater number of vocations for this province come from the vocation camp experience offers hope that this year too the seed has been sown in the hearts of these youngsters and will bear fruit.
